Adventure Hook
The town bakery cannot open because a flour-dusted pseudodragon has claimed the warm oven as its ancestral volcano, and the morning festival starts in half an hour.
Read-Aloud Opening
“Warm sugar fills the street outside Crumblebell Bakery. Inside, pans clatter, flour drifts like snow, and a cat-sized dragon pokes its head from the oven. 'Begone!' it squeaks. 'This volcano is mine, and so are the cinnamon buns!'”
DM Brief
- Use this to teach the basics: describe a scene, ask what each player does, roll only when failure would be funny or meaningful.
- No one needs to die. The dragon is scared, hungry, and dramatic; the real problem is smoke, crowds, and fragile festival cakes.
- End with a public celebration so new players feel the world respond to their choices.
30-Minute Pacing Notes
- 0:00–5:00 introduce character names and ask each player what breakfast smell reminds them of home.
- 5:00–12:00 Scene 1 teaches ability checks with low stakes and obvious props.
- 12:00–22:00 Scene 2 adds a tiny combat or chase; explain turns clearly and celebrate creative nonviolent actions.
- 22:00–30:00 Scene 3 resolves with negotiation, a final roll, and a festival reward.
Clip-Worthy Moments
- The tiny dragon tries to roar and coughs a perfect smoke ring shaped like a skull.
- A player catches a falling wedding cake with magic, a shield, or pure panic.
- The baker announces each hero's deed like a sports commentator to the watching crowd.
- The dragon accepts a ridiculous job title, such as Assistant Volcano Inspector.
Scene 1 — Flour on the Floor
7 minutes“The bakery is chaos in miniature: sliding trays, spilled sugar, frosting footprints, and a rolling pin barricade built by something with very small claws.”
Goal: Let new players try checks, questions, and roleplay without pressure.
What Happens
- • The baker begs the party not to hurt the dragon if possible; the festival needs twelve trays of buns.
- • Floury tracks lead from a cracked delivery crate marked 'Warm Stones — Handle Gently'.
- • A DC 10 Nature or Insight check shows the dragon is nesting because it misses warm volcanic stones from its crate.
Checks
- • Investigation DC 10 finds the missing warm stones under a collapsed flour sack.
- • Persuasion or Animal Handling DC 11 gets the dragon to talk instead of throwing muffins.
Scene 2 — Muffin Ambush
10 minutes“The oven door bangs open. A burnt muffin sails across the room like a cannonball. The dragon has armed itself with breakfast.”
Goal: Teach turn order through a playful fight or chase.
What Happens
- • Run the dragon and two animated muffins. They flee if the players offer food, warmth, or a safer nest.
- • Every round, a tray, cake, or customer is in danger; ask one player what they save before attacks happen.
- • If the players attack hard, the dragon uses smoke to hide rather than fighting to the death.
Checks
- • Dexterity save DC 11 avoids slipping on buttercream when crossing the bakery.
- • Performance DC 11 distracts the animated muffins with a heroic baking song.
Scene 3 — A Better Volcano
13 minutes“The dragon curls around the warm stones, eyes huge and wet. Outside, festival bells begin to ring. The first hungry children press their noses to the window.”
Goal: Resolve the conflict with empathy, cleverness, or one last bold action.
What Happens
- • The best solution is building a small stone nest beside the oven, but accept any plan that gives warmth, food, and dignity.
- • The dragon knows one clue about who shipped the stones: a red wax seal with a cracked mountain.
- • If treated kindly, it helps toast the buns perfectly with tiny controlled flames.
Checks
- • Survival or Mason's Tools DC 11 builds a safe warm nest from stones and pans.
- • Persuasion DC 12 convinces the dragon that a bakery can have two rulers: baker and dragon.
