Adventure Hook
Every bucket drawn from the village well now contains seawater, black sand, and tiny shells that whisper names. Last night, the mayor's son leaned in to listen and fell upward into the dark.
Read-Aloud Opening
“The village well gurgles like a throat. A rope hangs from the winch, but instead of dropping down, it rises into the shaft and vanishes into starless dark. From somewhere far below, or far above, a boy calls, 'I can see the ocean under the town.'”
DM Brief
- The well is a doorway to a pocket cavern beneath a drowned moon shrine.
- The missing son is alive, stuck on a ledge with a shell crown slowly turning him into the shrine's next tide-priest.
- This page works as a full adventure, but each scene can also be stolen as a quick one-shot seed.
Scene 1 — The Upside-Down Descent
15 minutes“Cold mist breathes from the stones. When you step onto the bucket, gravity changes its mind. The well mouth becomes a shrinking circle beneath your boots as you descend upward through dripping dark.”
Goal: Make the entrance memorable and establish the shell-whispers as clues.
What Happens
- • Characters can climb the rope, ride the bucket, or use magic. The shaft is 40 feet of strange gravity, not an instant fall trap.
- • Whispering shells say names of people who once made wishes at the well. Speaking a name aloud reveals a brief vision of the shrine below.
- • A failed descent check costs time or gear, not lethal damage.
Checks
- • Athletics DC 11 controls the climb through reversed gravity.
- • Perception DC 12 hears the mayor's son answering from below.
- • Religion DC 12 recognizes the shells as offerings to a forgotten tide saint.
Scene 2 — The Black Sand Market
20 minutes“The cavern opens into a dry market of rotted stalls. Fish bones hang like wind chimes. Behind one counter, a crab the size of a stool arranges coins into careful little towers.”
Goal: Give the party a weird NPC encounter that can become trade, comedy, or combat.
What Happens
- • The crab, Clicks-in-Fives, collects wishes that fell down the well. It knows where the boy is but wants a new wish in payment.
- • A wish can be sincere, petty, or fake. Sincere wishes make the final scene easier because the shrine recognizes living hope.
- • If attacked, Clicks-in-Fives fights defensively and calls two smaller crabs from the sand.
Checks
- • Persuasion DC 12 trades a wish for directions.
- • Insight DC 11 reveals the crab values stories more than coins.
- • Nature DC 12 notices the crab's shell is latched with a removable silver hook.
Scene 3 — The Drowned Moon Shrine
25 minutes“A moon carved from mother-of-pearl hangs over a pool with no reflection. On a ledge above it kneels the mayor's son, wearing a crown of shells that opens and closes like a breathing mouth.”
Goal: Rescue the boy by breaking, bargaining with, or satisfying the shell crown.
What Happens
- • The crown wants the village to remember the old shrine. It will release the boy if promised a yearly bowl of clean water and a song.
- • Breaking the crown starts combat with a Tide-Shell Husk formed from old offerings.
- • A character who made a sincere wish in Scene 2 has advantage on the first social or magical check here.
Checks
- • Performance or Religion DC 13 sings the old tide saint to sleep.
- • Athletics DC 12 reaches the ledge while water rises.
- • Arcana DC 13 cracks the crown's binding without hurting the boy.
