Adventure Hook

The party must carry a living lantern across the Last Bridge before a river of shadow swallows the road, the village behind them, and everyone watching from the shrine windows.

Read-Aloud Opening

“Rain turns the bridge stones black. Behind you, villagers crowd the gate with blankets over their heads. Ahead, the far tower burns with one gold window. In your hands, a hooded lantern beats like a frightened heart while the river below whispers your names in voices you almost recognize.”

DM Brief

  • The lantern contains the last safe dawn for the valley; if it goes out, tomorrow arrives without sunlight.
  • The bridge is already breaking. Make every scene visible and physical: ropes snap, stones drop, faces vanish behind fog.
  • Give the players three obvious levers: protect the lantern, save bystanders, or strike the shadow heart chasing them.

30-Minute Pacing Notes

  • 0:00–3:00 cold open: explain the lantern, show the bridge, ask each player what the lantern light reveals about them.
  • 3:00–12:00 run Scene 1 fast; every failed check costs either lantern light or a stranded villager's safety, never time spent debating.
  • 12:00–22:00 run Scene 2 as a moving obstacle. Ask for one action per player, cut quickly, and narrate the bridge falling behind them.
  • 22:00–30:00 start Scene 3 even if the party has not solved everything. The shadow catches up on schedule for a clean finale.

Clip-Worthy Moments

  • The lantern projects each character's heroic future on the fog for one sentence before danger hits.
  • A bridge span drops away while one player is still standing on it; cut to their reaction before asking for the save.
  • The shadow speaks in the voice of a defeated enemy or former mentor and offers to save one villager for the lantern.
  • Final shot: the first blade of dawn crosses the bridge as the party decides who holds the lantern up.

Scene 1 — The Toll of Names

8 minutes

“A toll booth leans over the bridge like a broken tooth. Its ledger flaps open in the rain, writing names by itself. Each new name makes the lantern dim.”

Goal: Get the party moving while establishing the cost of the bridge.

What Happens

  • • The toll booth demands a true name before the gate unlocks. Players can give real names, fake names, or break the booth.
  • • A DC 12 Arcana or Religion check reveals the booth feeds on hesitation; decisive lies work better than nervous truths.
  • • Three villagers are trapped under a cart beside the booth. Freeing them takes one action and a DC 12 Athletics check or a clever spell/tool use.

Checks

  • • Deception DC 12 fools the ledger with a false name long enough to open the gate.
  • • Thieves' Tools or Sleight of Hand DC 13 jams the quill and stops it from writing more names.
Fail forward: On failure, the gate still opens, but the lantern loses one of its three flames. At zero flames, the final enemy gains advantage on its first attack.

Scene 2 — The Falling Span

10 minutes

“Halfway across, the bridge exhales. Mortar becomes dust. A wagon, two goats, and a screaming bellringer slide toward a gap opening in the road.”

Goal: Run a kinetic skill challenge with visual choices for the stream.

What Happens

  • • Ask each player for one rescue, movement, or support action. Three successes gets everyone across with the lantern steady.
  • • Good approaches include cutting harnesses, leaping between stones, freezing loose rain, talking the goats calm, or bracing the lantern bearer.
  • • A shadow hand rises through any new crack and tries to pull the lantern down first, not the heroes.

Checks

  • • Acrobatics or Athletics DC 12 crosses the broken span under pressure.
  • • Animal Handling, Performance, or Persuasion DC 11 stops the panicked goats from knocking someone over.
Fail forward: On two failures, the party reaches the far half, but one saved NPC is left dangling below. Rescuing them in Scene 3 costs an action.

Scene 3 — The Shadow Under the Arch

12 minutes

“At the final arch, the river climbs upward. It becomes a tall black shape with a crown of drowned candles. The far tower is only thirty steps away.”

Goal: Defeat, distract, or outrun the shadow before the lantern goes dark.

What Happens

  • • The Shadow Tollkeeper starts 30 feet away and advances toward the lantern bearer every round.
  • • A character can spend an action to raise the lantern and force the Tollkeeper to make a DC 12 Wisdom save or lose its reaction.
  • • The encounter ends when the party carries the lantern into the tower window, drops the Tollkeeper to 0 hit points, or sacrifices one treasured memory to relight the lantern.

Checks

  • • Religion DC 12 turns a saved villager's gratitude into radiant pressure, dealing 5 radiant damage to the Tollkeeper.
  • • Intimidation DC 13 makes the shadow answer one question before it attacks: it fears bells rung at sunrise.
Fail forward: If the party loses the lantern, dawn still comes, but one PC's shadow remains on the bridge and waves goodbye whenever they stand in moonlight.
