Adventure Hook
A blue door appears in the road wherever the characters try to go. Its brass knocker knows their names and insists they are late for an appointment they never made.
Read-Aloud Opening
“The road ahead is empty except for a blue wooden door standing upright in the dust. It has no wall, no hinges, and no shadow. The brass knocker lifts itself, taps twice, and says, 'At last. We were beginning to worry you would miss the rest of your life.'”
DM Brief
- Do not prep a map. The door leads to three rooms in order: Waiting Room, Memory Kitchen, Appointment Hall.
- Ask each player one personal question when a room needs detail. Use their answer immediately.
- The antagonist is the Appointment Keeper, a polite construct that files people into destinies they did not choose.
Scene 1 — The Waiting Room
15 minutes“Beyond the blue door waits a narrow room full of chairs labeled with your names. A clerk made of folded paper looks up from a desk and says, 'Reason for refusing your assigned future?'”
Goal: Start roleplay immediately and let the players define stakes.
What Happens
- • Ask each player what future their character fears becoming. The paper clerk writes it down and stamps it APPROVED.
- • The room's exit opens only after someone admits they want something different from what others expect of them.
- • Characters can trick, argue with, or help the clerk find its own missing name.
Checks
- • Persuasion DC 11 convinces the clerk that destiny paperwork can be revised.
- • Investigation DC 11 finds the clerk's blank name tag under a chair.
- • Intimidation DC 13 opens the exit but causes a Paper Hound to follow later.
Scene 2 — The Memory Kitchen
20 minutes“The next room is a warm kitchen that smells different to each of you. Something simmers on the stove. On the table sits a place setting for one person who is not here.”
Goal: Create emotional texture without needing backstory prep.
What Happens
- • Ask one player who should be sitting at the empty place. That memory appears as steam, unable to speak except through gestures.
- • The stove demands an ingredient: a regret, a joke, a drop of blood, a secret, or a song.
- • Feeding the stove creates a key-shaped loaf. Refusing wakes the cupboard mimic.
Checks
- • Insight DC 12 understands what the silent memory wants.
- • Performance DC 11 satisfies the stove with a song or story.
- • Medicine DC 10 safely gives a drop of blood for groups who choose the grim option.
Scene 3 — The Appointment Hall
25 minutes“A hall of blue doors stretches farther than sight. At the nearest desk sits a porcelain-faced figure in a tidy coat. 'You may now proceed,' it says, 'to the life selected for you by precedent, pressure, and probability.'”
Goal: Conclude with a choice: accept, rewrite, or destroy the appointment system.
What Happens
- • Each door shows a future based on a fear named in Scene 1. The Keeper says those futures are efficient, not fair.
- • The party can fight the Keeper, overload its files with contradictions, or make it choose its own future for the first time.
- • If a character walks through a displayed future, they vanish for one round and return with advantage on their next roll after rejecting it.
Checks
- • Persuasion DC 14 convinces the Keeper that chosen futures create better records than assigned ones.
- • Arcana DC 13 rewrites door labels with the key-loaf crumbs.
- • Athletics DC 12 topples the filing cabinets, creating difficult terrain for everyone except Small creatures.
