Free Quick D&D One-Shot for Streamers (Ready to Run in 30 Minutes)

A complete short one-shot for streamers: a hook that grabs chat from second one, three punchy scenes, a simplified stat block, and a twist nobody sees coming. Copy it. Run it tonight.

You want to run D&D on stream but you don't have six hours to prep a dungeon. Good news: a great 30-minute one-shot for streamers doesn't need six hours. It needs one strong hook, three scenes with escalating stakes, one memorable villain, and a twist that makes chat lose their minds.

Below is a complete, free quick D&D one-shot you can read in five minutes and run tonight. No fluff. Just what you need.

The Cartwright's Ghost

For 2–4 players · 30 minutes · Stream-optimised

The Hook (Read This to Your Players Out Loud)

“It's past midnight on the Ashford Road. A merchant's cart sits abandoned in the fog, one wheel cracked, horse long gone. The body inside — wrapped in merchant's cloth — shouldn't be moving.

But it is.”

Why this works for stream: It's immediate. No lore dump. Chat knows the stakes before your players do. The moment you describe the body moving, chat is already theorising.

Hand each player a one-sentence character concept: the muscle, the schemer, the healer, the wildcard. That's all they need.

Scene 1 — “It Woke Up” (10 minutes)

The cart holds Edran Ashcroft, a murdered merchant. He's undead — not mindless, just furious. He doesn't attack. He asks one question: “Where is my sister?”

Investigation or Insight checks (DC 12) reveal a dagger wound under the wrappings, a sealed letter addressed to a noble estate, and a ring carved with a twin motif.

⚔ Chat Decision Moment

Ask chat to vote before the players decide: “Help the undead merchant, or hand him to the city guard?”

Either choice works. If they help: he tells them the estate address. If they hand him over: he escapes anyway — he's a revenant, he can't be stopped until his purpose is complete.

DM note: Keep this scene snappy. No combat yet. This is pure mystery setup — let players ask Edran two or three questions, then move them toward the estate.

Scene 2 — “The Estate” (10 minutes)

Vella Ashcroft, Edran's twin sister, owns the Ashcroft family trade house. She hired the party independently to “investigate a theft from her brother's last shipment.” Arriving with Edran — or with the letter — changes the energy fast.

Vella is calm, well-dressed, and immediately tries to bribe the party (200 gold) to leave and forget what they saw. A Persuasion check DC 10 gets her to admit the theft. Insight DC 14 reveals she's terrified — not of them, of Edran.

⚔ Chat Decision Moment

“Take the gold and walk away, or stay and get to the truth?”

Players who take the gold: Edran appears behind them on the road. He follows until they finish the job — he literally cannot stop.

If the party presses harder (Intimidation or Deception DC 12), Vella breaks: she admits she hired an assassin, but insists Edran was going to sell their family trade routes to a rival guild and destroy everything they built together. She didn't want him dead. She just wanted him stopped.

Scene 3 — “The Reckoning” (10 minutes)

Edran arrives. He always arrives. Vella and Edran face each other for the first time since his murder. This is the scene chat came for.

The party has three options:

  • Protect Vella. Fight Edran. He won't die — revenants don't — but you can buy Vella time to flee. He'll be back, but the session ends with her alive and running.
  • Let Edran take vengeance. Step back. He kills Vella. He vanishes into mist, his purpose complete. The trade house is leaderless. The guild war starts anyway.
  • Broker a deal. Persuasion DC 16, or roleplay something that genuinely moves them both. Edran agrees to return to death peacefully if Vella confesses to the city watch. It's the hardest path. Chat always loves it most.

End with a single line that lands. Try: “The fog lifts. Whatever was left of Edran Ashcroft — the fury, the grief, the twin who wanted his life back — is gone. The only sound is the road, and whatever you chose to do with it.”

Stat Block — Edran Ashcroft (Simplified Revenant)

Streamlined for quick reference. No searching the manual mid-session.

Damage ImmunitiesPoison, necrotic
Condition ImmunitiesCharmed, exhaustion, frightened, paralysed, poisoned, stunned

Actions

Multiattack. Two Vengeful Strike attacks.

Vengeful Strike. +7 to hit, reach 5 ft. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) bludgeoning + 14 (4d6) necrotic damage.

Horrifying Visage (Recharge 6). Each non-undead creature within 60 ft. must DC 14 Wis save or be frightened for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns.

Special Trait

Undying Purpose. If Edran drops to 0 HP, he stabilises at 1 HP at the start of his next turn unless his purpose has been fulfilled. He cannot be permanently destroyed in this session — the players can only delay or redirect him.

The Twist (Reveal This in Scene 3)

The sealed letter in the cart? It's addressed to the rival guild. Edran was going to sell the routes — Vella was right about that. But the letter is dated three days after his murder.

Someone forged it. Someone who wanted Vella to commission the hit. Someone who benefits from both siblings being gone and the trade house collapsing into chaos.

The real villain isn't in this session. That's the hook for next time.

Drop this in the final two minutes. Players who thought they solved it realise they only solved the surface. Chat goes feral theorising about who forged the letter. That's your clip.

Quick Streaming Tips for This One-Shot

  • Open stream with the hook text. Read it aloud slowly. Let the chat react before you say another word.
  • Name both Chat Decision Moments on screen — put a poll up if your platform supports it.
  • When Edran and Vella face each other in Scene 3, slow down. This is the emotional core. Don't rush it.
  • The forged-letter twist is your clip. Pause, let it land, let chat react. Then end the session there.
  • Post-session, ask chat: 'Who forged the letter?' Let them theorise in the VOD.
